Sexy Summer SKIN

It's summer time! Time for beach trips and barbecues, short shorts and going sleeveless. Around this time of year I start to notice how pale my skin looks from being indoors most of the winter and early spring season. My blue veins are exposed under what I call "cuddle skin", (get it? from cuddle weather!) So, as we push our cozy sweaters to the back of the closet and pull out the crop tops, we'll need to readjust our skincare routines to embrace the summer heat.

I've been researching all kinds of products that both nourish and protect skin that's exposed to mass amounts of sunlight and sometimes showering twice a day. I was particularly interested in products I could make myself out of raw, natural ingredients from my kitchen. Not only does it save a TON of money, but crafting your own skin products is super beneficial to the overall health and vibrancy of your skin.

So, how do we transition? What are the ways we can shield ourselves from damaging sun-rays and big brand chemicals? How do we begin to shift from hermit mode to confident, radiant summer peacock? I'll tell you how.

The best defense I've found for my crackly dry, Sahara Desert skin is the miracle oil of carrot seed. Carrot seed oil is the business, y'all! It's super absorbent, so it doesn't sit on top of the skin. It smells amazing, like roasted cocoa beans. Just when you think it couldn't get any better, I've learned that it's also a natural SPF 40. I'm so in love.

This summer I'm equipped with a sexy summer skin crew of products I made in my own kitchen, bottled and ready to serve me oh so well:

- Cali Carrot Body Moisturizer

- Honest Honey Face Wash

- Bouncy Aloe Face Mask

- Sweet Orange Sugar Body Scrub

Cali Carrot Body Moisturizer

1/4 cup Avocado Oil

2 Tbsp Almond Oil

2 Tbsp (four inch leaf) Aloe Vera gel

1 Tsp Vitamin E

1/4 cup Coconut Oil

1/3 cup Carrot Seed Oil

Mix the avocado, almond, aloe guts, vitamin E and coconut oil first with a whisk. Add the carrot seed oil last and whisk again, making sure it's all smooth. Transfer to a tightly sealed container and store in a room-temperature, dry place.

I'll be using this mix on every inch of my skin this summer.

Honest Honey Face Wash

1/4 cup liquid Dr. Bronner's Castile soap

1/4 cup raw Honey

2 Tbsp distilled Water

1 Tsp Apple Cider Vinegar

10 drops Tea Tree Oil

1 Tbsp Carrot Seed Oil

10 drop Citrus Essential Oil

Mix all these items together with a whisk and store in any kind of soap dispenser. I used grapefruit essential oil in my wash for fragrance. Without an essential oil, the wash can smell pretty bland on its own. This wash sucks out all kinds of impurities and restores the face's natural pH balance. I'm in need of all the help I can get maintaining balance this summer, for sure.

Bouncy Aloe Face Mask

2 Tbsp (four inch leaf) Aloe Vera gel

1/2 Tbsp Turmeric powder

1/4 cup raw Honey

2 Tbsp Almond Oil

I chose this particular group of ingredients for a mask because I have extremely dry skin. This recipe helps give my skin the moisture surge it needs, while the turmeric powder locks in a radiant summer glow. Aloe can be your best friend in the summer time because it soothes skin exposed to sunlight and has incredible restorative qualities. The sun can be as harsh as hell! No one wants to shrivel up from the extremities of her environment. I know I don't.

Sweet Orange Sugar Body Scrub

2 cups White Sugar

1/4 cup Orange zest/shavings

3/4 cup Coconut Oil

20 drops Citrus Essential Oil

The secret to smooth, eye-catching skin that bounces against the sun's rays is proper exfoliation. I try my best to avoid scrubbing more than I have to but when I do, oh man! It's always a treat. The scent of oranges brings so much happiness, and using the peels makes the skin even happier. I'll keep this scrub near the shower for those days I want to flaunt my sun-kissed arms and legs at outdoor gatherings.

Side Note: Essential oil of eucalyptus keeps mosquitoes away.

We can achieve wonders this summer with hydrated, nourished, blindingly glowing skin. We tend to go on so many journeys to find what makes us feel even the slightest bit comfortable in our own skin, but I've discovered some fantastic formulas that are sure to be that summer solace we all crave.

I've recorded the steps of these recipes in a compilation video I'll be sharing on My Ivy Diary YouTube channel. If you're in need of a more visual guide, I've got you. I'm confident that this sexy summer skin crew will have my back, and legs and cheekbones this season and they will do the same for anyone else who dares to join me in the light.

Happy summer y'all!
